Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about mental health and promote well-being. It allows individuals, organisations, and communities to come together and address mental health challenges.
This year’s theme is “Moments for Movements”, which encourages everyone to prioritise physical activity to support mental well-being. Regular movement has been shown to improve mental health, enhance quality of life and prevent various health conditions.
How can I look after my mental and physical well-being?
Nature and Outdoor Activities:
- Spending time in nature has proven to positively impact mental health. Consider going for walks in the countryside, exploring parks and forests, or trying outdoor activities such as swimming, football, or running.
Try Something New:
- Occasionally, step out of your comfort zone and embrace new activities. This could be a dance class, a cooking workshop, or learning a musical instrument. Our team recently undertook a charity hike in the Brecon Beacons, a day dedicated to trying something new for the team while getting out in nature, positively impacting the team’s physical and mental well-being - Read about our Hike for Heroes.
Plan:
- Having events and activities to look forward to creates a sense of excitement in times that may otherwise feel monotonous and demotivating. Adding moments for movement to your calendar, whether a fitness class, a social walk with friends or a trip out of town, will contribute to a positive mindset.
Practice Mindfulness:
- Take time to notice the everyday, pay attention to your surroundings, and do it often. You can incorporate this into movement through yoga, meditation, or Pilates, which are great exercises for clearing your mind.
Connect with Others:
- Connecting with those around you is a great way to spend quality time with friends and family, combat feelings of loneliness, and provide an opportunity to reach out for help or offer it to your peers.
